Voice Dialogue, a new way to see the competing and conflicting parts of our personalities

A number of years ago I was introduced to very useful therapeutic tool, Voice Dialogue™ (VD) by another Imago Relationship Therapist. Voice Dialogue is a process developed by Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone, clinical psychologists, to help people become aware of the different parts of their personalities and how their interaction helps and hinders them in their lives.

The Stones have developed a framework called Psychology of Selves that is the basis of Voice Dialogue. Psychology of Selves proposes that our personalities are constructed of many sub-personalities. Voice Dialogue describes some of the common sub-personalities such as internal critics, pushers, responsible parents and vulnerable child that may influence our thoughts, feelings and actions..

Through Voice Dialogue we are able to know more about these parts of our personalities and develop new ways to work with them. We learn to reclaim parts of ourselves that may be lost or disowned and we gain greater awareness of how we attract and interact with other people in our lives. We develop an aware ego process that allows us to make clearer choices and enjoy greater autonomy.

Voice Dialogue is a tool that can be used in or outside of therapy. It augments therapy by helping people see their own internal landscape more clearly. The work is often deep and profound and may be combined with Imago Relationship Therapy for especially rich work in the area of relationships.
