Compulsive Spending and Debt Self-Test

The following questions may help you determine if you have a problem with compulsive spending or debt.

Check all symptoms that you experience.

____ Are you preoccupied by moneythinking of it constantly?
____ Do you buy things that you don’t want or need because they’re on sale?
____ Is your entire identity wrapped up in plastic or money?
____ Are you always trying to beat your checks to the bank?
____ Do you believe that having more money would solve most of you problems?
____ Do you pay only the minimum balance on your accounts each month?
____ If you have money left at the end of a pay period, are you obsessed by having to spend it quickly?
____ Do you always have to charge emergenciesflat tires, sick pets, unexpected company?
____ Are your closets filled with items still unopened?
____ Do you insist on picking up the check at a bar or restaurant?
____ Do you put dinner tabs on plastic, then collect cash from others with you?
____ Do you buys things on credit you would NOT buy if you were paying cash?
____ Do you notice that you generally live from paycheck to paycheck?
____ Have you considered or actually had to file bankruptcy to solve a pattern of overextending financially?
____ Do you tend to feel compelled to use extended credit limits on credit cards?
____ Have you had items repossessed, utilities disconnected or creditors calling demanding payment due to a pattern of overspending?
____ Have you cut up credit cards or left them at home when you shop, only to get new ones or use your identification in order to
          charge?
____ Do you routinely refuse to keep a check record, reconcile your bank statement or pay your bills when due?
____ Have you from time to time taken small items unlawfully when you had the money to buy them?
____ Have you switched price stickers or figured out other ways to trick store personnel so you get items cheaper?
____ Do you get excited about buying something only to lose interest once you’ve gotten it and start dreaming about something else to
          acquire?
____ Do you often have inner battles over whether to let yourself buy something?
____ Do you have a pattern of feeling that a certain purchase will insure your happiness or complete you somehow?
____ Are you amazed sometimes how much money you have spent and have little idea of where it went?
____ Do others in your life, family members, close friends, tell you that you spend too much?
____ Do you notice the amount of you debt rising each year or that you get out of major debt only to incur it again?
____ Do you like to tell how much you spend or how much you pay for particular items but feel guilty about it inside?

An answer of “Yes” to any five (5) of these questions indicates a problem with spending or debt.
